NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A man who shot former New Orleans Saints star Will Smith following a traffic crash nearly eight years ago has been convicted of manslaughter. The jury acquitted Hayes of attempted manslaughter in the shooting and wounding of Smith's wife during the April 2016 confrontation. Hayes, 36, had previously been convicted in December 2016 of manslaughter in Smith’s death and attempted manslaughter for the gunshot wounding of Racquel Smith. The city's top prosecutor insisted during his closing argument that Hayes fired needlessly. But there was no witness or forensic evidence to back up Hayes’ claim that Smith had wielded or fired a weapon.

He will be the first former Chargers player to return to the team as head coach. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders have agreed to hire Antonio Pierce to be their next head coach and the two sides are finalizing the deal, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. Pierce, 45, took over as Las Vegas' interim coach on Halloween night after Josh McDaniels was fired. CNN —An NFL official who was involved in a collision with New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara suffered a fractured fibula and a dislocated knee and will have surgery, the team announced on Monday. In the second quarter of the Saints’ game against the Detroit Lions at the Caesars Superdome on Sunday, Kamara was tackled close to the sideline of the field before falling to the ground as a result of the hit. The Saints said that Piazza had undergone an MRI on Monday and was seen to by an orthopedic doctor. He was found to have suffered a fractured fibula and a dislocated knee but his “blood vessels remain intact” and would have surgery likely next week. “He appreciates the many well wishes and the continued care he continues to receive,” the Saints said.

(AP) — New Orleans Saints receiver Michael Thomas is facing simple battery and criminal mischief charges following a confrontation with a construction worker, police said Saturday. Thomas, 30, was arrested without incident Friday night, was cooperative with investigators and was released later that night, Kenner police Lt. Mark McCormick said. New York CNN —Sam Bankman-Fried was found guilty Thursday following a monthlong trial that was almost as wild as the rapid rise and fall of cryptocurrency exchange FTX itself. He was found guilty of stealing billions of dollars from accounts belonging to customers of FTX. LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Southern California street gang leader charged in the fatal shooting of Tupac Shakur in 1996 in Las Vegas will make a court appearance Thursday with a lawyer from one of the city's best-known political families, one that has represented mobsters, athletes and other famous clients. Attorney Ross Goodman told The Associated Press Wednesday he'll appear in Duane “Keffe D” Davis' defense against accusations that Davis orchestrated the drive-by killing of the rap music icon. Davis won't immediately enter a plea, Goodman said, he'll seek another two weeks to confirm that he'll be hired for Davis' case. Goodman is a son of former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and current Mayor Carolyn Goodman. In July, a police raid at Davis' home drew renewed interest to Shakur's unsolved murder, one of hip-hop music’s enduring mysteries.
